Advice from A Single Girl wrote a entry on Ageism.
And although this post wont be about the same thing, it will hit on similar topics. The media.
Go read her entry, and the comments to follow, it will only take a minute. I'll wait.
...Okay, so you're up to date where this is heading.
I've been fighting a funk of woes is me about an ex recently. He calls from time to time and I usually don't take the calls, cos his intentions are never honourable. He called recently and I've wanted so badly to talk to him. But for all the wrong reasons. I'm lonely and I miss him. Must-not-return-the-call.
I caved. I called him. But this is where the funk gets a little deeper. He never returned the call. Hmph.
Seriously? We could be in an all out war with each other and he could have a g/f at the time, he-always-calls-back. Or a quick text to say he's camping, out of town etc, and will call me back soon etc. Nothing.
Zip, Nadda. Now I'm mad, sad and lonely. Great combo.
While I cleaned my apartment in a huff to work it out, I decided to just let the funk be and embrace it so it could pass faster. Turned on the TV. First of all, that was the biggest mistake of the day.
The was a documentary called Plastic.
UBC did a study of who is found more attractive cos of their symmetry. Those who were found more attractive, made more money, lived longer, had better marriages etc.
Those who were not deemed as good looking were had their pictures judged by survey takers by random people on the street and were asked to give a reason as to why that person was less attractive than the other pictures. My first thought was... "Does this mean all model are geniuses in disguise? If so, we're all screwed!"
That is until they targeted overweight people.
People who are viewed as fit, slim, in shape, etc had appeal of attraction.
They must be healthy, mentally, financially, educated, made more money, more creditable, reliable, stable etc.
Those who were viewed as overweight ,obese, or had a non symmetrical breasts, shorter leg, lazy eye, bad teeth etc were viewed as lazy, less worthy, less secure, less creditable, uneducated, unhealthy, and less financially secure.
However, if you were seen as attractive but then had a flaw like a chipped tooth, you were instantly put into the other category. There was the one person who said so and so is less attractive, but this is just a picture, and unless I know them personally it's unfair to discriminate them for any flaws.
Someone marry that man asap!
What a way to fuck with someones self esteem and worth. Because the media said so.
I'm a big girl. I won't be forever. I've been secure with that and it shows.
Watching this show sucked whatever self esteem and worth I was feeling yesterday right out the fucking window. Now I'm feeling bad about myself and need a little reinsurance that I'm worthy of being desired, loved etc. I called the ex. Add feeling rejected with no return call to the worthlessness ingrained into my brain thanks to the media and I wonder, wow, how is it I don't run out and kill myself now?
As a result, I ordered KFC last night. Shut up, don't judge me.
Cried on/off all night, cos this stupid show played on my already vulnerability of feeling lonely. To top it off, I finished the night off watching Bowling for Columbine. Add heart ache and madness to all the above, I'm a blubbering mess.
I always look at people and wonder, how they got to where they are. They may be larger than me, and even look sloppy. That doesn't mean that that person isn't capable of making more money than I. Maybe they do. Or could even be a member of Mensa International. Who am I to make judgement without knowing them.
We're all guilty of it. It's a work in progress.
The media seriously needs to stop fucking with peoples minds.
How does anyone outside the medical fields benefit from knowing any of this?
Well even the university's who do these studies and experiments, need to stop publishing them.
You're born a certain body type, intelligence, handicap etc. You can not control your DNA in the womb, so why does the media feel the need to say.. Hey you're not 100% symmetrical, therefore you're not as good as another.
What happened to those Dove commercials?
The ones that empowered women and young girls of all shapes and sizes to love themselves and the skin they are in?
This could go on and on and on.... but you get my point.
The media is evil.

....... Yes it was rhetorical. Although I'm currently not dating cos I think men are stupid. I love men. I do. But I think I would lo...
I am a "healthy" girl that, according to 'them', I am MORBIDLY OBESE. I am 5'7" and I SHOULD weigh about 150 at the most. I have weighed that before and I think that I look anorexic. I would like to weigh about 170 or so. I look healthy then and not so sick. I actually weigh about 250, but I don't look like I do. I am proportioned (translate: big boobs/big butt) and I am also healthy as far as all those issues that being overweight supposedly brings (blood pressure, diabetes, etc).
ReplyDeleteI have been fortunate to marry a man that like a girl 'healthy' and that helps with my self esteem issues. I still avoid looking at ME in the mirror tho'...
damn media...
Yes I think the media is an awful part, but I think we are often our own worst enemies. I am trying to mentor a young girl (20) who is "curvy" by media standards - I would say fit, since when should a 6-8 be "curvy" but all she sees in herself is fat, which makes me wonder what does she see when she sees me? The reality is we see normal, healthy and curvy in others much more readily that we ever do in ourselves.
ReplyDeleteAdd to that the drama with your non-beau and it makes your brain commit the cruelest of offenses, insecurity. I will say maybe it is the position of Mercury or something but men and I feel icky issues are coming on full force for us Geminis it seems. I have been in bed for the last week with this god awful throat infection, wanting to exercise to feel me (not to lose weight) and now I have AB coming over for dinner Thursday, let's just say I know the wanting to cry in a bucket of KFC, but thankfully they have yet to make it gluten and dairy free...
S&P - A sixe 6-8 at any age is ideal!
ReplyDeleteWhether you're curvy, retangle or pear shape.
We should all brain storm a way to make her see herself in a better light.
At my fittest, I was a size 8/10 and only weighed 110 lbs. Not fat by any means, however, my shape "curvy" wasn't the standard teenager or young adult look. (J-Lo curves werent popular yet, to be accepted as sexy).
Koodos to you for being a mentor!!!!
You get extra brownie points for that! A friend does it and as much as she loves it, its taxing on her mental and emotionally at times.
As for how she see's others compared to herself, thats a hard one. I see others and think "Gawd please say I dont look like that!" When in reality I'm probably a completely different body type and size.
Have you ever watched "How to look good naked"? British or Canadian version ,doesn't matter.
Great show! Maybe get her to watch it on youtube or something. It will help clear it up that more women than not see themselves flawed when in reality they are not.
The KFC was better the second day. And I'm still bummed a little that I haven't received a call, but its getting easier. I actually had to screen my calls/text messages last night from friends calling to give me shit.. of course with my best interest at heart.
Gawd I would kill to be a size 8/10 again.
God the media, the government, the politics... I swear the world is a god damn conspiracy theory. But I don't like to think about it too much or else I will just become a paranoid mess (too much MonsterQuest and UFO Hunters on OLN apparently). Who is really to determine what is beautiful and what isn't anyways?
ReplyDeleteS&T - Exactly. Who's word makes it gold as to what the standard of health and beauty is.
ReplyDeleteDon't laugh but I've been watching Jessica Simpsons new show, For the Sake of Beauty.
They travel the world and different cultures and learn what makes women beautiful in each country. And its vastly different in each culture.
So who the hell is anyone is to say what beautiful to another person.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and to be told that's wrong???....
There is something seriously wrong with our world when the government and/or media can control or influence what we see as beauty.
....yes I'm still bitter about it.
